Keimzeit – The time of germination
SYNOSSIS
During the night of last 29th October, overwhelmed by exceptional winds, about 14million trees collapsed in only a few hours. The ecological and environmental balance of Northern Italy is believed to have been compromised. The landscape has changed overnight, the population is still shaken.
The ashes of a long-gone forest crush under the firm steps that never stop. While humans and trees are linked, the forest destruction presents an existential dilemma. People’s anecdotes, a special tree, a sculptor and his robots weave into each other to restore the connection between art, science and nature.
The mechanical arm is hesitant in front of the trunk. It starts to carve it. We don’t know what shape it has in mind, but the stem is slowly formed into a cloud of sawdust and fog. Out of the trunk, a human form slowly comes to life, an incredible man/tree.
STATEMENT FILM DIRECTOR
I look for complexity and a documentary on several thematic levels, which does not provide answers but renews questions and questions in its continuation. Keimzeit is a journey without boundaries in human and natural forests in search of man and the multiple meaning of tree. Is it possible to give a positive value to destruction? Anyone looking for a verb addressed to the past in this documentary will not find it. I believe that extinction is a must. Change should not frighten us. Mutation is in our nature. Recognise it, and we will also appreciate climate change.
